GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Investigators have released the identity of a man found shot outside a home in Granite City late Thursday night.
Charles Weiss, 54, was found dead near a home along 12th Street just before 10 p.m. Police say they believe the shooting happened in an alley between Meridian and Edwardsville off 12th just before 10 p.m.
Weiss was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center where he later died.
Friends of the victim say he was a Vietnam War veteran who lived in the neighborhood and was walking back from a nearby convenience store when he was shot. One neighbor told News 4 she went outside after hearing three gunshot and found the victim in the back yard of the home where he lived. She said as she applied pressure to his wounds to stop the bleeding, he told her he was attacked by three or four men
Granite City police called in investigators from the Major Case Squad following the victim's death. Police say 24 investigators are now working on the case. While not motive is clear, investigators say the incident appears to be a robbery.
