(KMOV) – Authorities say a suspicious package discovered at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville Monday morning turned out to be a pile of phone books.

According to police, the package was found inside the hospital’s Medical Arts Building in the 180 block of S. 3rd St. around 9 a.m.

It was not known where exactly the package was left or who discovered it.

The Illinois Secretary of State Police Bomb Squad and specialty units from Madison County were on the scene investigating.

Police said all staff was evacuated from the Medical Arts Building and Belleville Medical Building as a precaution. Officials said the hospital was still open for all in-patient and out-patient procedures.

After a bomb squad investigation, police revealed the package to be simply a cardboard box wrapped in plastic that was full of phone books.
