(KMOV) – Police are investigating after a man’s body was found in east St. Louis Wednesday morning.
According to police, a person was walking along N. 28th between State and Ohio around 7 a.m. when they saw a body in a field.
The passerby called police, who arrived to the scene and found the body of 52-year-old David Shephard, who had been shot multiple times.
Authorities said while police were on scene, several kids were walking to Officer Elementary and saw the body in the field.
Shephard’s cousin, Tremylla Glenn, says it’s something children should never have to see.
“They’re seeing too much of this. Way, way, way too much of this,” she said. “You shouldn’t be seeing no dead bodies, only on TV.”
East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore said the department did its best to keep small children from the scene.
“I had to reroute them a different way to get them away from it..but of course they saw the body lying on the ground,” he said.
Floore also went to the school to notify the principal, telling her to tell parents and make counselors available if need be.
While the family reported the Shephard missing Tuesday afternoon, it had been much longer since they had seen him.
