SUNSET HILLS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Police are investigating what they call an apparent murder-suicide after an elderly man and woman were found dead in a Sunset Hills home.

Wayne Bales, 73, and Monique Martin, 72, were found dead in an upstairs bedroom of their home on Maclane Court around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to police, both victims suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. Based on evidence at the scene, police say Martin shot Bales then turned the gun on herself.

According to police, the two were supposed to be leaving for a cruise. When they did not show up at the airport, police say friends called one of the victim's brother. He reportedly went to the house to check on the couple and found them dead.

Neighbors say Bales and Martin, who were not married, had been together for more than 30 years.

Sunset Hills police continue to investigate the incident, but say it is being treating as a murder-suicide. Police are interviewing friends and family to try and determine a motive.

Officials say it is not clear how long the two had been dead when they were discovered.
