(KMOV) –Charges were issued on Wednesday in the shooting death of a 9-year-old boy in north St. Louis on July 10.

Authorities issued charges against Marquan D Bland, 22, for first-degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, three counts of first-degree assault, firing a weapon from a motor vehicle and first-degree tampering.

Police say said the victim, Tyrese Short, was a passenger in a vehicle traveling south on Goodfellow near Lillian just before 3:30 a.m. when at least one shot was fired into the car.

According to court documents, Bland was driving a stolen Ford 500 with three passengers when he allegedly began pursuing Short’s vehicle at a high rate of speed. He then opened fire on the vehicle. Police said Short was struck once in the head.

Authorities said the driver of the victim’s vehicle then drove to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s north patrol building.

From there the boy was taken to Children’s Hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead Wednesday night by hospital officials.

The father of the victim and two other men were in the car when the shooting occurred. They were not hurt.

The cause of the shooting was unclear.

According to state records, Bland has prior convictions including first-degree tampering, resisting arrest, and second-degree burglary from cases dating back to 2009 and 2010. He pleaded guilty to each charge.

The investigation is ongoing.
