Police: 2 injured as car collides with semi-truck near Winfield

(KMOV.com) -- Two people were injured in a head-on collision near Winfield on Friday afternoon.

The accident happened on Highway 79 near Highway 47 at 4 p.m.

According to police, a Chrysler Sebring traveling southbound swerved to avoid a vehicle that pulled into its path. The vehicle then reportedly left the roadway, struck a mailbox, crossed over into the northbound lanes and collided with a semi-tractor trailer.

Brandon Smith, 23, was driving the Sebring. He suffered moderate injuries in the crash. A passenger in the car, 18-year-old Brittany Darnell, was seriously injured.

Smith and Darnell were transported to St. Joseph West Hospital for treatment.

Authorities did not say whether the driver of the semi suffered any injuries.
