(KMOV) -- Many parents in the Alton School District are upset after learning a high school student allegedly sexually assaulted another student and were never notified about the incident.

“They contact us about everything else that goes on and this is something serious that parents should know about,” Courtney Huggins, a parent, said.

Most parents say they didn’t know about the alleged sexual assault and Alton School officials say no letter was sent home because the two students involved knew each other.

The Alton School District issued a statement saying, “Once notified of the alleged incident, Alton High administrators immediately contacted the Madison County Sheriff's Department."

The Madison County State Attorney’s Office says the case is sealed and will not release the names of the students or any more details.

The 20-year-old student is in jail on a $100,000 bond.
