ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Police say an officer shot and killed a man who had a weapon at a White Castle in north St. Louis early Saturday morning.

Thomas Donovan, 21, walked up to the counter of the White Castle on Natural Bridge and Kingshighway around 4 a.m. with a weapon that appeared to be a gun, according to police. Two officers were working secondary at the restaurant and both reportedly told Donovan to drop the weapon.

Investigators say when he would not drop the weapon, a veteran female officer fired a gunshot. Donovan was shot in the chest, and was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. He was then taken into surgery, but later died at the hospital.

Police say the weapon Donovan was holding was later identified as a BB gun.

Employees say they believe Donovan is the same man who robbed the restaurant in November. Police are investigating this possible connection.

Homicide detectives are on the scene, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.

The officer, a 21-year veteran of the force, was not injured in the incident. She will be place on paid administrative leave for a few days. The commander on the scene says the officer was not at fault.
