(KMOV) – An ordinance passed Tuesday evening makes it now illegal to jump off bridges in the city of St. Charles.

The ordinance was passed in response to teenagers jumping off bridges in the village of New Town after heavy rain this year raised water levels in the town’s lakes and canals higher than usual.

While New Town already had “no jumping” signs in place, police couldn’t enforce the rules because a law was not on the books.

Residents eventually contacted St. Charles City Council representatives about the issue, leading to the ordinance being passed.
