(KMOV) – Missouri Department of Transportation officials say at least 1,000 drivers have decided to take the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge with a ramp on the Poplar Street Bridge closed.

That’s based on numbers MoDOT collected since the ramp closed on the Poplar Street Bridge two weeks ago.

In April, officials said statistics showed fewer drivers were using the $650 million “Stan Span” than originally estimated.

Three days before the bridge opened in February, project officials told News 4 it would take 20 percent of traffic off the Poplar Street Bridge and as much as 50 percent off the Eads and MLK bridges. After 10 weeks, traffic was down more than 25 percent on the Eads and 40 percent on the MLK, but down just about 7 percent on the Poplar Street Bridge.

But officials noted all traffic on the five main bridges - the Stan Span, the Poplar, the MLK, Eads and McKinley - was up more than 7 percent.

Officials suggest drivers should continue to consider using the “Stan Span” as an alternative, especially with IDOT set to resurface the MLK Bridge and ongoing construction on the Eads Bridge.
