(KMOV.com) – Metro East road crews worked around the clock overnight to make sure roads were clear enough for traffic.

In Belleville, crews had many of the roads clear by Thursday night, but icing became a much bigger concern.

There were scattered fender benders in the area all through Thursday, and city officials say while crews will be out for the most of the night, school districts did not risk transportation Friday morning and canceled classes.

In Collinsville, roads were slushy and icy even in the center of town. While routes were passable, they were still very dangerous.

The situation was the same farther down Route 159 in Fairview Heights where most stores, including the St Clair Square Mall, which closed at 4 p.m. Thursday.

On the highways, IDOT crews managed to keep many interstates clear and by Thursday night, they moved into getting the roads ready for Friday morning.
