(KMOV) -- Mayors across Illinois are speaking up about the ongoing pension funds crisis for police and fire departments.

Local officials say the increase in pension costs is forcing them to eliminate important service and staff positions, which are essential to the communities.

The newest effort comes after state lawmakers dealt with their own pension problem in 2013.

Right now, cities must pay more into pension funds or lose state funding in two years.
