IMPERIAL, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A 54-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after police found his wife dead in a bedroom Friday evening.

The Jefferson County Sheriff said officers were called to the 100 block of Harvest Grove around 7:45 p.m. to check the well-being of the people inside the home.

When deputies arrived, a neighbor said they were contacted by the victim's mother to check on her daughter and grandchildren. The neighbor was not able to talk to the children's parents, but was able to remove the children from the house until deputies arrived.

A neighbor told police the children's parents, Deborah McDonough, 38, and Matthew McDonough, 54, were separated.

Deputies entered the home and found Deborah dead in a bedroom. Matthew was found in the basement and appeared to have self-inflicted cuts on his body.

Matthew was treated by EMS personnel and transported to the hospital. After his release, he was immediately booked at the Jefferson County Jail.

Matthew is being held on a $500,000 cash only bond.
