MADISON COUNTY (KMOV.com) -- Officials in Madison County are meeting to discuss mental health related issues that are plague the criminal system.
News 4 has learned many of the inmates in the county’s jail have mental health problems and police say they’re not receiving proper treatment.
Currently nearly 240 people are behind bars. The jail holds up to 300.
Sheriff Robert Hertz says many incarcerated individuals are repeat offenders who suffer from various degrees of mental health disorders.
“County jails, city jails are not mental health institutions,” he said. “These people need something more than what we can provide.”
The sheriff says one solution is to treat criminals while they are on probation so they don’t reoffend once they’re free.
