(KMOV) -- A Lindenwood University athlete was charged with risking infecting another with the HIV virus after meeting the victim on a social media outlet.
St. Charles authorities say Michael L. Johnson, 22, was charged with recklessly risking infection of another when infected with HIV.
In May, 2013, the victim contacted the St. Charles Police Department after he believed he had been infected with HIV by Johnson who he met through social media.
Johnson, a member of the Lindenwood University wrestling team, was told he was positive for the HIV virus in January 2013 and knew of the infection before engaging in sexual activity with the victim but did not disclose it to him.
St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar said Johnson and the victim had sex at least twice in the wrestler's Lindenwood dorm room earlier this year. At that time, the victim contracted the HIV virus
Authorities believe the instances are extremely rare of contracting the virus through collegiate wrestling contact with Johnson; they say those subjects may consider contacting their physicians.
The St. Charles Police Department is also requesting that any other individuals who may have been in an intimate relationship with Johnson to contact the Detective Bureau at (636) 949-3320.
