HIGHLAND, Ill. (KMOV) -- Police continue investigating a home invasion and subsequent shooting in Highland early Sunday morning.
A 33-year-old man was shot and seriously injured after he allegedly forced entry into an apartment in the 2600 block of Eagle Way around 3:30 a.m.
After entering the apartment, police say the man physically assaulted two sisters, ages 47 and 55. One sister told police she was defending the life of her sibling, and had begged for the intruder to stop and get out of the apartment.
“I didn’t want to kill the man, I just wanted him to stop hurting my sister,” said Debbie Keeney, the woman who shot the intruder.
The older sister then reportedly fired two shots; the first was a warning, and the second struck the man in the back. The suspect was transported to Barnes-Jewish hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
“I regret that I shot a human being, yeah,” Keeney said. “But I don’t regret saving my sister.”
A small caliber derringer was recovered at the scene.
A police investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed so far.
