(KMOV) – In the wake of the Target security breach, consumers are learning it’s not just credit cards at risk.
It was recently announced some government benefit EBT card information was also stolen, leaving some people without the money they were counting on to pay the bills.
Many EBT cards were shut off until they could be replaced, leaving cardholders no way to access the funds they needed to buy food or pay rent.
The first reports of this came out in Virginia.
The vendor of the Eppicards, Xerox, blocked all the affected cards on January 1, leaving thousands without access to any funds.
That included Jessie Johnson a divorced single mother of six.
“To take your card and not be notified and not have access to the money, it’s just really rough,” she said. “I’m sure we’ll find a way. We always do.”
The replacement cards should arrive any day for those waiting.
News 4 checked with Missouri and Illinois, and as of right now there are no reports of a breach of benefit cards here.
