(KMOV) – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a scammer, claiming to be a deputy with their office, calling Franklin County residents claiming they have written bad checks.

Police say if they have to contact victims of the scam, they will do so in one of two ways. If a deputy is on patrol and needs to call from their cell phone, they will normally block the call. Deputies will also call from the Sheriff’s Office land line.

The scammer requests they call a “716” phone number to fix the problem.

If you receive what you believe to be a scam, do not give out personal information. Police say to ask for the deputy’s name, badge number, and the department phone number they can be reached at.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Office can be reached at 636-583-2560.
