ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A Franklin County Detention Center employee is accused of putting pepper spray on inmates’ food.

Franklin County officials say several inmates had been given a piece of pizza by the deputy in question.

After eating the pizza, the inmates suffered discomfort in their mouth and stomach. As a result of an internal investigation, that deputy was suspended, with pay, pending a disciplinary process.

According to authorities, law requires that a person who is suspected be paid until they are afforded due process. The deputy’s name has not been released.
