FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- After more than 50 years in law enforcement, Florissant Police Chief William Karabas will retire.
Family and friends joined Karabas at a retirement party on Sunday, while his last day on the job will be Dec. 31.
Karabas has been police chief in Florissant for the last 11 years. He previously served as police chief in Brentwood, Cool Valley and the University of Missouri - St. Louis.
Karabas said while retiring is bittersweet, he is looking forward to new experiences.
"Well, I think there comes a time in everybody's life where you gotta step back and maybe relax a little bit, and have a new focus, and try to do some other things," Karabas said.
Major Tim Lowery has been appointed as new Florissant police chief. He is set to take office on Jan. 1.
