BARTELSO, Ill. (KMOV) – Authorities say a firefighter is dead after being struck by a fire truck while working to control a house fire in Bartelso, Illinois on Sunday.

Authorities with the Sante Fe Fire Protection District announced that Timothy Jansen, 45, died while working at the scene of a fire in the 9750 block of River Rd.

Officials said the first call came out as a timber fire about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. But when crews arrived on scene, they discovered the fire had spread to a nearby home.

Sante Fe Fire Protection District Chief Adam Maue says Jansen was pulling hoses off a fire truck when he slipped and the truck struck him. Maue says the truck’s driver didn’t know Jansen had fallen and thought it was OK to move the vehicle.

Jansen was rushed to a hospital in Breese where he later was pronounced dead. He was a volunteer firefighter for about 15 years and is survived by a wife and two young daughters.

Bartelso is about 45 miles east of St. Louis.
