(KMOV) -- A glitch sparked a fire in an underground tunnel causing several downtown buildings to evacuate Tuesday afternoon.

Ameren officials say a transformer failed under a sidewalk at 7th Street and Locust causing the fire around 5 p.m.

Witnesses reported seeing large puffs of smoke billowing from the manholes from several blocks away.

Power was also knocked out to the surrounding area causing building occupants to become trapped in the elevators.

Crews rescued at least ten people from the trapped elevators and no injuries were reported.

Ameren crews will be working overnight to access the damage.
