EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Edwardsville's police chief has resigned in the midst of a federal investigation, according to a release from Mayor Gary Niebur's office.
James Bedell, appointed Police Director in 2007, announced his resignation to the mayor on Friday.
In the release, Niebur calls news of an FBI investigation "troubling and of great concern." Niebur said Edwardsville city staff are fully cooperating with agents from the FBI and IRS.
He declined to comment further on the investigation, but said it is being coordinated by the US Attorney.
Major Don Lask, formerly Deputy Chief of Police, has been appointed to serve as interim police chief.
Niebur said his office will work with city council to choose a permanent replacement for former Chief Bedell.
