(KMOV.com) - Officials broke ground to raise Leanor K. Sullivan Blvd. as part of phase two of the Gateway Arch renovation project on Thursday.
The plan is to raise the road 30 inches to guarantee that it is out of flood areas. A spokesperson with the Great Rivers Greenway estimates that the raise will allow the area to be used 70 percent more a year.
Construction on the road is expected to take two years and cost $33 million. The group overseeing the project says the money upfront is estimated to bring in $65 million a year.
Raising the Leanor K. Sullivan Blvd. is just one part of the $380 million Gateway Arch renovation. The whole project is expected to be completed by the Arch's 50th anniverisary in Oct., 2015.
