ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) –Work to upgrade infrastructure at a downtown intersection could cause even more traffic problems.

Ameren Missouri crews have been making underground infrastructure upgrades at the intersection of Tucker Boulevard and Washington Avenue for several months. After receiving a lot of complaints from nearby residents and drivers, the company worked out an agreement with the City of St. Louis to complete the project weeks ahead of time.

In order to finish ahead of the original deadline, crews will be working longer hours. The increased work will begin during the last week of December.

“It’s a big inconvenience. The whole north sidewalk is not passable,” said St. Louis Streets Director Todd Waeltermann. “We have to cross people to the south sidewalk. It’s not a good thing right now."

The work is supposed to be completed by early March, 2013. Originally, it was supposed to be finished in April.
