(KMOV) – A major safety hazard led to classes being canceled at a large Illinois school district.
Ameren Illinois shut off gas at the Alton Middle School and 15 surrounding homes following the discovery of a gas leak near the annex building around 10 a.m.
Officials announced an 11 a.m. early dismissal for students on Monday, as Ameren crews worked quickly to contain the leak.
"Right now what we're dealing with, we know exactly where the issue is with the leak in the pipe, when we started to dig we came across a natural spring that is bubbling directly underneath the hole,” said Brian Bretsch with Ameren Illinois.
School officials say 1,400 students will not have classes on Tuesday as crews work overnight to fix the broken line.
