(KMOV) -- City officials are being stuck with the bill when owners of crumbling downtown St. Louis city buildings abandon their responsibilities.

According to records obtained by News 4, over the past three years, building owners owe close to $1 million for the cost of tearing down buildings they let slip into disrepair.

Crews were forced to tear down the Powell Square Building after the owner let it slip into terrible disrepair, making it a hazard to be in or around.

The Cupples building has been deemed unsafe when crews condemned the building after that owner failed to pay for the needed repairs.
