SHILOH, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A 12-year-old boy who was accidentally left behind at a Metro-East gas station is now reunited with his family.
Police say a military family traveling from Colorado Springs to Florida stopped to get gas at a Motomart on Green Mount Road in Shiloh, Illinois around 7 p.m. Saturday.
The boy, who had been sleeping under a blanket, got out to use the bathroom. In the family's hurry to get back on the road, police say they took off without doing a head count.
When the boy realized his family had left, he waited 20 minutes to see if they would come back. When they did not return, he told a gas station clerk, who then called police.
Shiloh officials put out a bulletin on the family's two vehicles. Nearly an hour later, an Illinois State Trooper stopped the vehicles on Interstate 57. Police say that's when the boy's family, including his mom and stepmom, realized he was not in the back seat.
The family rushed back to the gas station, where they were reunited with the boy around 10 p.m.
Police say the boy was nervous he would be in trouble.
