(BaseballStL) -- Nothing went right for the Cardinals to start Game 1 of the World Series against the Red Sox. But none may linger more than the loss of Carlos Beltran after the second inning Wednesday.
Making his first World Series appearance, Beltran was replaced in the field one inning after crashing into the right field wall to rob David Ortiz of a grand-slam home run.
He was diagnosed with a right rib contusion and reportedly taken to a nearby hospital for X-rays which came back negative, according to Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.
“Carlos was taken out of the game with an injury to his ribs,” Matheny said. “Went in to have X‑rays done and CT scan here locally, and everything came back negative. He's going to be day‑to‑day.”
Shane Robinson moved from center field to right and Jon Jay entered to play center in Beltran’s absence.
Beltran has been the ‘punch’ to the Cardinals offense this postseason. In 11 games, Beltran has a team-high 12 RBI this postseason.
