ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – According to officials at Backstoppers, the charity received more than $385,000 in 2012.
The charity supports families of fallen police officers and firefighters, and reported the majority of that money came from the annual Guns N’ Hoses event where police officers and firefighters face off in boxing matches.
The remaining $100,000 came from the family of the president of the Guns N’ Hoses Boxing Association.
Mayor Francis Slay was happy at the figure donated and said the organization is important to the St. Louis community.
“We need to make sure that if the unthinkable happens - should one of them lose his or her life in the line of duty, we need to have their backs and the backs of their family members as well,” he said.
With 2012’s donation, the annual Guns N’ Hoses event has donated more than $4 million for backstoppers since 1987.
