ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – For many Americans, giving to charities over the holidays is an important part of celebrating the season and the Better Business Bureau has some tips to help you find deserving charities.

The BBB has information on 629 charities in what they call a “Wise Giving Guide.”

Charities know that people are often in a generous mood during the holidays and  some put off giving until their tax adviser suggests that it could reduce their tax bill in April. As a result, mailboxes often are stuffed with charitable solicitations as well as catalogs this time of year.

“Consumers want to know that their money is being spent wisely when they write a check to a charity,” said Michelle L. Corey, BBB President and CEO. “If they see the BBB Accredited Charity seal on a charity’s website or other literature, they can be assured that the charity complies with the BBB’s 20 Standards of Charity Accountability. Of the 629 local charities whose reports are available at stlouis.bbb.org, approximately 164 are accredited.”
