(KMOV.com) – Alton, Illinois police have begun to issue tickets to drivers who violate the state’s new “hands free” cell phone law.

So far in 2014, Alton officers have written seven tickets for the new offense.

The law took effect January 1, and requires drivers use a hands free option, like a Bluetooth headset or speaker phone while driving.

Officer say each driver ticketed for breaking the new law was fined $75.
