WASHINGTON PARK, IL (KMOV.com) – Woodrow Wilson Elementary has been abandoned for years, but the empty building is still causing problems for the city.

Just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to a call of a fire on the premises. More than 20 firefighters from four different departments showed up to fight the flames.

According to Washington Park Fire Chief Ken Moore, the fire broke out in the basement of the abandoned building. A fact that is suspicious since there are no utilities hooked up to the former school.

Photos show what appears to be damage from previous fires on the premises. Chief Moore says it’s a constant problem.

The building is not secured, and anyone passing by has access to it.
