ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A St. Charles High School student accused of selling drugs on school grounds was taken into custody last week, according to authorities.

Police say the 16-year-old girl has not been formally charged, but was arrested at the school on Jan. 16.

Officials have not released many details, citing the student's age, but have confirmed the case involves prescription medications.

Superintendent Jeff Marion said notifying the police is standard procedure for school officials in situations involving drugs.

Marion said the student will likely be suspended from the school for 10 days, and will then proceed through a disciplinary hearing to determine further punishment.

A St. Charles parent, who asked not to be identified, said the case has her concerned about the accessibility of drugs in schools.

"I just think it's a sad thing that that's what this world has come to, that kids are so easily accessible to even be able to get those in their reach, and then just to have those thoughts behind it as a means of doing that to make some pocket change."
