ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) -- A 24-year-old St. Charles woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with a heroin overdose death.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Whitney Michelle Patrick pleaded guilty in early October to involuntary manslaughter and drug distribution after Jemil Francis Ely’s overdose death in September 2012.

Her boyfriend, Thomas Lucas Jr. pleaded guilty to the same charges in August and is awaiting sentencing. Lucas told police he knew that Ely had overdosed at least twice before and was with him one of those times. Ely was a married father of three.

Lucas told police that he is a recovering addict who sold heroin to Ely so that he and Patrick could get the drug for free.
