COTTAGE HILLS, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- An East St. Louis woman was charged with aggravated battery to a child after police say she repeatedly struck her three-year-old daughter in the head.

A witness told police Tonisha Smith, 22, hit her daughter multiple times with a closed fist at a homeless shelter in Cottage Hills, Ill. Thursday night. Officers on the scene said the child had visible swelling on her forehead.

Smith was arrested at the scene and transported to the Madison County Jail, where her bond has been set at $30,000.

Officials said the three-year-old was treated for her injuries and taken into the custody of Children and Family Services.
