WELLSTON, Mo (KMOV) -- Police are on the hunt for suspects in a close-call burglary in St. Louis County. The break-in happened just minutes before a family returned to their Wellston home on the 6400 block of Wellsmar Avenue.

“The mayor called me and told me someone broke into my house,” said victim Chris Weaver. “When I got here the police said they had recovered some of my stuff on the next street.”

An alarming call made even worse because Weaver knew his family could’ve been home.

“My mother in law had just left and my wife wasn’t here,” he said.

Police say the burglars went in a front window, took what they wanted from the home, and took off across the street into the woods.

A neighbor alerted police, and it wasn’t long before K-9 officers showed up.

“They almost immediately followed the track to where he had hidden the property and then in the process of trying to locate the suspect they lost the track,” said Wellston Police Chief G.T. Walker.

Police say they found three of the family’s TV’s and other belongings in those woods.

With a person of interest in custody, police believe two other people might be involved.

Weaver says this latest burglary is just another in a string of break-ins in the area.

“A lot of my customers at the station I work at tell me it’s going around here a lot,” he said.
