(KMOV) – Two men have been charged with felony stealing related to a “pigeon drop” incident that occurred in Florissant on December 14.
An 89-year-old victim was approached outside the Grandview Schnucks store by one of the two men who claimed the victim could make some money very easily. The victim agreed to listen and allowed the victim into his car and was told to drive to the area of West Florissant and Dunn Road to meet with the second suspect.
The victim told police that he heard the two suspects, Eugene O’Neal and Lawrence C. Van, talking about someone they knew that needed a portion of their $100,000 before returning to South Africa to look for family members that were being held hostage. The victim later admitted to being duped by the suspects’ story and drove them to his bank to withdraw $5000.
The suspects then left and the victim discovered his money had been switched out with torn newspaper.
The suspects were caught the following day by an off-duty police officer who noticed a suspicious situation near the Shop n’ Save near North Highway 67 and News Halls Ferry. After determining the suspects fit the description of the original report, the officer called for assistance in arresting the suspects.
Bond has been set at $50,000 for each suspect.
