Church Vandalized in Alton
ALTON, Il (KMOV.com) -- Two teenage boys have been caught by police after they caused more than $3000 in damage to Greater St. James Baptist Church in Alton. The burglar alarm went off and likely prevented more damage, but the church bus is currently out of use because of the vandalism.
The teens broke two windows on the bus and poured motor oil inside. They broke into the church by shattering a window. Inside they kicked in and broke an office door. They had opened several drawers but Reverend E.J. Roberts says nothing was stolen. He credits the burglar alarm that went off and likely scared the boys off.
“I’ve always been brought up to respect and reverence the church and apparently these young men have not had that training,” said Roberts. “So I’m praying that they not be punished too harsh, and learn a lesson at the same time.”
The church has insurance, but Reverend Roberts says he’s not sure how much it will cover.
Alton Police are not releasing any information on the teenage suspects because they are juveniles.
