ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV) – A Fort Zumwalt middle school teacher in custody on child pornography charges may have video recorded male students as they were undressing during a camping trip, Fort Zumwalt Supertintendent Bernard DuBray said in a letter sent to parents Monday.

Matt Hansen, 38, a former seventh-grade math teacher at West Middle School, assisted with a camp known as the Outdoor Education Program. During the camp, located in Troy, Hansen helped look after fifth-grade students from Progress South, Lewis and Clark and Dardenne elementary schools.

According to the letter, Hansen, who was arrested after allegedly being caught with child pornography, “secretly and inappropriately videotaped” students in “various stages of undress as they readied themselves for evening showers.”

Police said the students did not know they were being recorded and no evidence suggests Hansen shared the videos with anyone else.

“Words cannot adequately express how disappointed I am that this has occurred. As we move forward we will be reviewing all camp program procedures to determine if any modifications for the future need to be considered,” DuBray wrote.

DuBray said parents will be notified as soon as police determine which students were videotaped.

Police say Hansen secretly videotaped about 80 male students, all fifth graders, at a four-day outdoor camp.

Students from three different schools in the district attended the camp.

Police say all the recordings took place in the last four years and that Hansen hid cameras in a room where the young boys would undress before showering.

DuBray tells News 4 the district does a very thorough background check that Hansen passed.

“How he did, I dont know must mean he had a clean record but the fact is it wasnt just anybody," he said. "All people who go up there have background checks and go through the interview process.”

The Ottumwa Courier in Iowa reports that police arrested Hansen on June 8 after he threatened to jump off a cell phone tower.

Hansen has been a teacher at West Middle School since 2004.
