(KMOV) -- A 32-year-old man now faces charges after police say he allegedly misfired a handgun while drunk and shot a woman in De Soto.

On Sunday, December 1, officers with the De Soto Police Department responded to an apartment in the 1200 block of Sycamore Hills Drive in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a 32-year-old male who told them there was a woman in the apartment who had been shot.

Officers discovered the victim, a 21-year-old female, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.

The victim was transported from the scene by Valle Ambulance and later air lifted to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur.  According to authorities, her injuries are not life threatening.

Following a brief investigation, the suspect and victim reportedly told officers the incident happened after the suspect was attempting to unload a handgun and misfired while he was in what appeared to be an intoxicated state.

A search warrant was obtained for a sample of the suspect’s blood, as well as a search of the subject’s apartment.  Following the search, officers discovered a quantity of what was believed to be Marijuana, a scale, and grinder.

The suspect was book and later released pending charges for the drugs as well as unlawful use of a weapon.

The investigation is ongoing.
