FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Ferguson police say it's taken over a year, but they finally found the man who grabbed a 14-year-old boy off the sidewalk and sexually assaulted him. Authorities say the man was located in a Florida jail, held on unrelated charges.
Corey McClendon, 39, is charged with one count of kidnapping and two counts of first-degree sodomy. Police say McClendon dragged the 14-year-old into a stairwell, held the boy against his will and sodomized him.
Police say the sexual assault happened December 28, 2011 in the 100 block of South Florissant Road, just a block from the police department.
"The suspect approached the victim and forced him to come up to the stairwell of the church," said Police Chief Timothy Lowery.
Police said they did not know who their suspect was until a DNA match months after the crime. At the time, McClendon had been arrested for burglary in Iowa, convicted and sent to a half-way house. But in November 2012, he walked away before local authorities had a chance to bring him back for trial.
McClendon turned up next in Palm Beach County, Florida, where he was arrested on New Years Eve for theft. He was charged with grand theft, and remains locked in the Palm Beach jail.
Local authorities say they are anxious to see him brought back to St. Louis County to face charges for sexual assault.
"With a warrant being issued out of the state of Missouri, the St. Louis County fugitive team will be notified by the agency in Florida when he's ready to be picked up," said Capt. Dan DeCarli.
McClendon is also charged with rape in San Bernardino, California, for a sexual assault that happened in 2005. He also pleaded guilty in St. Louis in 1994 to charges of assault, attempted armed robbery and false imprisonment.
