ST. CHARLES, Mo.—A St. Louis County man faces sentencing in September after he was found guilty of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and injuring her dog so badly it had to be euthanized.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a St. Charles County jury needed just 45 minutes to find 37-year-old Charles Zidek of Ellisville guilty of felony animal abuse and burglary. Sentencing is Sept. 30.

Prosecutors say Zidek entered the St. Charles home by breaking a basement window about 2 a.m. on Oct. 9, 2011. He repeatedly threw the woman’s Italian greyhound, Vinny, against a bedroom wall. His former girlfriend was not home at the time. She found the dog the next morning.

The injuries were so severe that the dog had to be euthanized.
