CHICAGO (KMOV.com) - The two-year-old Antoine Cook is left with just memories of his father who was shot and killed while trying to save his life.
25-year-old Indiana National Guardsman Willie Cook, who had been home from Afghanistan for five months, was gunned down in his car on Feb. 2. He was in Chicago to visit his grandmother.
Police say 15 bullets pierced the car where Cook was found sprawled on top of his son. Despite his efforts, Antoine was struck by three bullets and sustained minor injuries.
“He saved his son,” said Laquana Norwood, Cook’s girlfriend. “He made sure that before he left the last thing he did was making sure his son was okay.”
According to police, the shooting was in retaliation for another shooting and is a case of mistaken identity.
Police are searching for the gunman.
