ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com ) - Police say a man was robbed, then shot at outside a food mart in north St. Louis on Saturday night.

The incident happened at the Emerson Food Market in the 4900 block of Emerson Avenue just after 7:30 p.m.

Police say the suspect, a man in his 20s, walked into the store to beg for money.

The victim, a 46-year-old male employee, denied the man's request for cash. The suspect then left store.

Police say as the victim was later leaving the building with cash earnings, the suspect approached him with a handgun and robbed him.

The suspect then fired two shots, but the victim, who has a conceal and carry permit, pulled out a gun and returned two shots. The suspect then fled the scene.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
