ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Police have issued a warning about job postings on Craigslist after a Jefferson County resident was scammed out of $2300.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department says the victim answered an ad to clean a reception hall after a wedding reception.

The scammers overpaid the victim in advance and told them to deposit the check and send back the overpayment but the check was fraudulent.

"I would suggest you deal locally where you can meet the person face to face, those type of things,” said Capt. Ron Arnhardt.

The ad was flagged and later taken down.

Authorities warn you should always be on guard when answering an ad on craigslist.
