(KMOV.com) -- A recent spike in three south St. Louis neighborhoods had police stepping up patrols on Monday.
St. Louis police started increasing patrols in the Shaw, Tower Grove South, and part of the Gravois Park neighborhoods hoping to deter some of the recent break-ins and robberies.
Ward 15 Alderwoman Jennifer Florida is optimistic the increased patrols will make residents feel at ease.
“We’re on a five year trend bringing crime down,” Florida said, “I think 46 percent and to continue that trend you need to be aggressive.”
Joshua Powlishta has lived in Tower Grove South for nine years and while he welcomes more police on his street, he said crimes seem to continue to spike and drop no matter what police do.
“Crime happens anywhere, but it’s a very good this they’re stepping up patrols,” said Powlishta, “In all honesty, I haven’t seen a big help with that, but I know it can’t hurt.”
Florida urges residents to do their part in protecting themselves while police pick up the slack.
“It’s important that the community and the police work together,” said Florida, “This is our city and it’s going to take a collaboration.”
