(KMOV.com) - Officials are investigating a case of illegal dumping in East St. Louis, after dozens of tires were dumped in a garage at a home on North 76th street.

St. Clair County said this is not only an issue in East St. Louis but across the area. In 2013, the county cleaned up 291,000 tons of tires which became a costly project.

"People are hiding tires in buildings that are unoccupied or abandoned," said Chris Cahnovsky with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

According to Cahnovsky, when businesses remove an old tire, they pay a fee costing anywhere from $1.00 to $7.00 to properly throw each tire away. To avoid the bill, people are throwing the tires out when no one else is looking.  Officials also said many from Missouri are dumping tires in Illinois to avoid fees.

Tires are also a breeding ground for mosquitos.

If you see someone illegally dumping, authorities ask that you contact them.
