(KMOV.com) – Police told News 4 a gang war is the primary cause of a rise in violence in Madison, Washington Park, Alorton, East St. Louis, and Brooklyn.

Over the weekend, five people were shot. One person was shot outside a nightclub in Brooklyn Saturday and four others were shot outside a club in Washington Park Sunday, one person died.

“It’s very very alarming, the amount of violence in all communities,” said Brooklyn Police Chief Tony Tomlinson. “Parents are sending their kids outs and they simply are not coming home because they are wearing the wrong colors.”

Tomlinson said he is working with other Metro East communities to try to end the gang war. Police said they want to sit down and meet face to face with gang leaders and offer them alternatives to gang activity.
