(KMOV.com) - News 4 has learned thieves are targeting homes in St. Clair County that are under construction.

St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson said the crime has been a major issue for at least a year. More than $500,000 worth of items has been taken.

“It’s kind of scary with my kids, letting them run around and play knowing that there are people who are running around your house and break in,” said new homeowner Samantha Harpel.

Deputies believe the stolen items are being resold or torn apart for copper. To put an end to the trend, deputies are increasing their patrols.

“Departments around the county have been putting officers on this detail trying to catch these people because I think it is one group,” said Watson.

News 4 will stay on top of this investigation.
